Metal fence painting and coating is refinishing an existing metal fence – cleaning off rust and old peeling paint, treating the bare metal, and applying a fresh protective coating that both looks good and actually protects the fence from further corrosion. This is maintenance work, not new installation, aimed at extending the life of iron or steel fencing that's starting to show its age.
Signs you need this include visible rust spots forming on the fence, especially at joints and welds where moisture collects, paint that's peeling, chipping, or flaking off in sections, a fence that's lost its original color and looks dull or chalky, or surface rust that hasn't eaten through the metal yet but is clearly heading that direction if left alone. Catching rust early with a proper recoat is significantly cheaper than waiting until the metal itself is structurally compromised.
We start by assessing the extent of rust and paint failure across the fence, since the prep work required depends heavily on current condition. Loose and peeling paint gets scraped and wire-brushed off, rust gets treated with a rust converter or fully removed down to bare metal in more severe spots, and the surface gets cleaned and prepped for new coating. We apply a rust-inhibiting primer to any bare metal areas, then apply the finish coat – typically a durable exterior metal paint or specialty coating designed for outdoor iron and steel. We work section by section to make sure coverage is even and thorough, not just a quick spray-over of existing problems.
Cost depends on the fence's total length and height, how much rust and paint failure needs to be addressed, and whether it's a straightforward recoat or more extensive rust remediation first. Older wrought iron fences in Portland, OR that haven't been recoated in many years often need more prep work, which affects both time and cost.
A rusting metal fence only gets worse the longer it's left. Call (877) 357-2520 for an assessment and quote.
